Outcome
Examine rural and remote firefighting realities in Saskatchewan.
Indicators
(a) Differentiate between wildland fuels (e.g., vegetation such as grass and trees) and built fuels (e.g., human development such as buildings).
(b) Identify wildland fuels common to the local area and other regions in Saskatchewan.
(c) Research statistics related to the occurrence of wildland fires in Saskatchewan and Canada.
(d) Examine factors that contribute to wildland fire development, such as wind, topography and drought.
(e) Assess firefighting challenges commonly presented by wildland fires and the possible tactics for fighting them.
(f) Identify factors rural and remote firefighters face in providing service in emergencies, such as distance to call, weather conditions, availability of water and availability of personnel.
(g) Examine staffing structures and compensation of rural and remote fire departments.
(h) Explore ways in which firefighters interact and communicate with local police and EMS services during scene calls.
(i) Examine the role of the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) in wildland firefighting.
