Module 25: Personal and Protective Equipment in Emergency Medical Services (Core)
Outcome
Assess the use of personal protective equipment and clothing in Emergency Medical Services.
Indicators
(a) Identify hazards (e.g., bodily fluids) commonly faced by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel.
(b) Examine environmental hazards (e.g., extreme cold, rain, snow) and the impacts of these hazards on the effectiveness of EMS personal protective equipment (PPE) and clothing.
(c) Investigate types of EMS PPE and clothing (e.g., gloves, gown, medical grade mask, goggles, uniform, boots, hearing pro) utilized by EMS personnel.
(d) Research the different grades of medical masks (e.g., medical, N-95, N-100) and when different grades of masking are required by EMS personnel.
(e) Describe the methods of fitting specialty masks (e.g., N-95, N-100).
(f) Describe when, where and how specific pieces of EMS PPE equipment are used.
(g) Describe characteristics and features of EMS PPE and clothing that make them effective and safe.
(h) Assess problems (e.g., restricted visibility, weight, maneuverability) associated with a variety of EMS PPE and clothing.
(i) Demonstrate the process of donning and doffing PPE (e.g., gloves, mask, gown) in a variety of circumstances.
(j) Examine protocols EMS personnel follow if they are exposed to contaminated bodily fluids.
