Module 41: An Introduction to Search and Rescue (Core)
Outcome
Investigate search and rescue services in Saskatchewan and Canada.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the purpose of Search and Rescue (SAR) services.
(b) Examine the organizational structure, implementation and operation of SAR services in Saskatchewan and in Canada, including the roles of the Search and Rescue Saskatchewan Association of Volunteers (SARSAV) and the Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada (SARVAC).
(c) Research the origins of SARSAV and SARVAC.
(d) Identify SAR chapters in Saskatchewan and the communities they serve, including those that serve First Nations communities (e.g., Prince Albert Grand Council Search, Rescue and Recovery; Southern Saskatchewan First Nations SAR; La Loche Dene Trackers).
(e) Describe the support that the Canadian Rangers provide to SAR in Northern and other areas of Saskatchewan.
(f) Explain the general responsibilities associated with the three levels of searchers (i.e., searcher, team leader, manager) involved in a search and rescue (SAR) mission.
(g) Investigate the skills and abilities (e.g., team player, communication skills, professionalism, responsibility) required of a basic level search and rescue volunteer.
(h) Discuss the physical and psychological demands associated with being a basic level searcher.
(i) Assess hazards (e.g., environment, animals, insects) associated with SAR.
(j) Examine the process for becoming a volunteer searcher in Saskatchewan.
(k) Explore the process of searching for a missing person in the local community.
