Module 42: A Search and Rescue Mission (Optional)
Outcome
Analyze elements of a search and rescue mission.
Indicators
(a)

Research the four phases of a search and rescue (SAR) mission according to the SAME acronym:

  • Search – searching for and finding the subject(s);
  • Access – reaching the subject(s);
  • Medical aid – providing as needed; and,
  • Evacuate – moving the subject(s).
(b) Identify SAR technology tools (e.g., GPS, Family Radio Systems, Personal Location Beacons, Night Vision Goggles).
(c) Demonstrate correct use of GPS or compass commonly equipment used by searchers.
(d) Compare the supplies and personal and protective equipment (PPE) required for SAR missions in various locations (e.g., northern, rural, urban, remote) and at various times of the year in Saskatchewan.
(e) Identify the items typically found in a 24-hour SAR kit.
(f) Identify practical steps for maintaining field health and hygiene for SAR missions of varying durations and in a variety of locations.
(g) Demonstrate proper procedures for radio communication for a SAR mission.
(h) Examine the importance of relationships with the local First Nations community (e.g., knowledge of the land, community, people and language) can make to a SAR mission on First Nations land or for a First Nation’s individual.
(i) Explain protocols that are required to conduct a SAR mission on First Nations land or for a First Nations individual.
(j) Discuss typical procedures for call-out and check-in associated with a SAR mission.
(k) Describe the purpose and process of an After Action Review (AAR).
