Understanding Brands
This program addresses what a brand is, the power of branding, what makes a brand, the creation and evolution of brands and the influence of brands. It defines and gives examples of corporate, family, individual and personal brands. Teens on a city street ask various passers by to identify brand marks and give their opinions about the influence of brands on their purchasing practices. A branding and marketing expert points out how branding is more than a product and involves a vision or idea that requires a strategy for engaging consumers. He also discusses the relationship between brands, historical contexts and societal values.

Eekwol’s Rhythm and Rap Show ft. Lindsay Knight. Grades 6, 7 & 8
Lindsay “Eekwol” Knight has been creating and performing hip hop music for many years. As an Indigenous artist, she draws on life experiences and collective histories within her work. As a mother she embraces the teachings of living in a good way for future generations. Eekwol engages schools in this knowledge and encourages them to reflect on their own understanding of “a good life” and then build these concepts and themes in the process of creative hip hop lyric writing. Through dance breaks, beat and rhythm identification and interactive step by step lyric writing, the kids access their creativity in a unique and powerful way.

Roll with It, Featuring Laura Hale. Grades 7 & 8
Roll with It is a collaborative project that includes all students contributing to the final artwork. The piece organically develops and evolves in response to student creation and composition. Laura explores materials and their transformation. Students consider colour, texture, shape, form and pattern while they develop material techniques. They cut, combine, layer and roll varying sizes of tissue paper strips into paper tubes that are then cut into bead-like lengths. Students then arrange and glue the rolled paper tubes of various sizes and colours in an upright position onto a substrate or surface (plywood or framed canvas) that will eventually hang on the wall in the school. The numerous irregular sized beads in a variety of colours sprout up in different directions, creating an abstract sculptural paper collage. The final artwork brings to mind aerial landscape views, satellite imagery and/or biological and geographical patterns and microscopic cellular formations.
