Art First Nations. Tradition and Innovation
Featuring both traditional and innovative art works, the posters in these kits are beautiful examples of painting, carving, clothing, basketry, jewellery and masks of First Nations peoples from the Arctic to the American Southwest.
The manual contains thematic modules comparing traditional and modern artists and their works from each of the five major cultural regions. Activities are suggested for each of the curriculum components. Included are biographies of artists, maps, timelines, assessment activities, bibliographies and a glossary.
These resources contain significant Canadian content. One module in each kit focuses on Plains art work, but the inclusion of Arapaho of Kansas and Oklahoma under the heading "Métis" may cause confusion. The map on page 19 in each manual shows where individual artists live/lived, but the actual cultures are more widespread.
Both kits are useful for the elementary level.

A Very Dangerous Pastime
The matter of understanding contemporary dance is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to developing audiences. This video provides tools that an audience can draw on when viewing a dance performance. Canadian celebrities share their ideas about dance while visual examples of contemporary dance and historical clips demonstrate the range of styles and techniques that dance in Canada offers. The strongest message, however, is that the final step towards the enjoyment of dance is up to the individual. This is an excellent video for promoting discussions about dance.

Haydyn's Farewell Symphony
Celenza's story is a delightful introduction to Joseph Haydn, his Farewell Symphony and 18th century life. Joseph Haydn served as personal composer for Prince Nicholas of Esterhazy for nearly 30 years. He composed music as requested by the prince, was responsible for the care of all instruments and served as spokesperson for the members of the orchestra. Summers were spent at the prince's summer estate in Hungary and one summer as autumn approached, the musicians were growing increasingly homesick. Prince Nicholas refused to return home and he also refused Haydn's request to have the musicians' families visit. Haydn decided to appeal to the prince through his Symphony in F-Sharp Major, which reflects the musician's anger, sadness and frustration. When Prince Nicholas heard the symphony, he was so moved that he decided to return home. The striking watercolour-and-ink cartoons with simple lines and exaggerated characterizations convey a sense of the excess and finery of the period. There are notes on both 18th century form and instruments, as well as on the events and personalities in the story.

Roll with It, Featuring Laura Hale. Grades 7 & 8
Roll with It is a collaborative project that includes all students contributing to the final artwork. The piece organically develops and evolves in response to student creation and composition. Laura explores materials and their transformation. Students consider colour, texture, shape, form and pattern while they develop material techniques. They cut, combine, layer and roll varying sizes of tissue paper strips into paper tubes that are then cut into bead-like lengths. Students then arrange and glue the rolled paper tubes of various sizes and colours in an upright position onto a substrate or surface (plywood or framed canvas) that will eventually hang on the wall in the school. The numerous irregular sized beads in a variety of colours sprout up in different directions, creating an abstract sculptural paper collage. The final artwork brings to mind aerial landscape views, satellite imagery and/or biological and geographical patterns and microscopic cellular formations.

Shakin' All Over: A History of Canadian Rock and Roll
This video demonstrates the rise of Canadian musicians in the 1960s as they became savier at promoting their work prior to national radio exposure and Canadian content regulations. From Vancouver's 4th Avenue and Winnipeg's community centres to Montreal's dance halls and Toronto's Yorkville and Yonge Streets, folksingers, suit groups, garage rockers, r & b revues and psychedelic bands struggled to get their music heard. Some were forced to seek fame in the United States, while others stayed at home and built careers. Shakin' All Over blends classic songs, rare archival footage along with candid interviews that include: Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman, Sylvia Tyson, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Robbie Robertson, Mathew Good, Bare Naked Ladies, Blue Rodeo and 54-40.

This video explores the precious period where notions and attitudes take shape in a child's mind, where questions come in waves, and the answers do not always make sense. Several visual artists, writers, and musicians recollect a time or an incident from their childhood that changed the way in which they looked at the world. They face some of their childhood fears again, while paddling around Saskatchewan lakes, walking across frozen dugouts, or facing the limitless, wide-open spaces of their youth. These memories are paired with the insightful, humorous and often surprising answers that children gave to some very important questions.

We must continue speaking our Cree language. The revitalization of language and culture are vital to the rebuilding of community. In this workshop, educators and students revisit our mandate for play. Interactive elements include familiarizing ourselves with voice and body as we explore animal play of the Treaty 6 territory. These include bear (maskwa), eagle (kihew) and buffalo (paskwa-mostos). Language is also incorporated from a beginner level. As we choose to listen to the words and meanings of select Cree terms, we begin to understand how language is vital to identity. The workshop culminates in students playing animals and characters in an excerpt from Curtis Peeteetuce's youth play, kiwek, which is inspired by the film Jumanji. A talkback with students allows for post-performance discussion among the students and a chance to share what was learned.

Responding to Arts Expressions
Responding to arts expressions is an important part of arts education. Viewing and listening are discovery processes that require critical and creative thinking in order to develop deep understanding of the arts. Throughout their arts education experiences, students are encouraged on a regular basis to respond actively to a wide range of art works from each of the four strands including dance, drama, music, and visual art. Students are also engaged in responding to films and other interdisciplinary forms of art.
