Examine the spiritual dimension of the "inner self" and determine the importance of nurturing it.
Indicators for this outcome
(a)

Explore and discuss ideas and questions which are of particular importance/interest but cannot easily be understood (e.g., "Why do we dream?", "What happens to pets after they die?").

(b)

Investigate common definitions of the "inner self" (e.g., quiet awareness of who one really is and one's reason for being).

(c)

Develop respectful language sometimes used to describe the "inner self" (e.g., soul, spirit).

(d)

Determine the "inner self" as the centre of thoughts and feelings that guide/influence personal behaviour.

(e)

Examine and respond to stories that include depictions of spirit/soul.

(f)

Describe the "inner self" as that which is important but only visible to others if chosen to be (e.g., ideas such as "It matters more who you are on the inside than how you look on the outside").

(g)

Participate in experiences designed to increase one's sense of connection to others and other life forms (e.g., carefully observing the natural world, class rituals focused on appreciating each class member, participating in cultural activities).

(h)

Expand and deepen personal interests and appreciation for all that life has to offer (e.g., observing animals and insects, collecting leaves or stones, exploring ways clouds are unique, wondering and learning about the origins of rain).

(i)

Distinguish between thoughts, feelings, and actions that nourish or damage one's "inner self".

Seven Grandfather Teachings: Character Development
In this program, students learn about The Seven Grandfather Teachings, also known as The Seven Sacred Teachings. This is a set of teachings on human conduct towards others. They are what was traditionally and still is needed in order for communities to survive. The teachings - love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility and truth - cannot be used in isolation and are interdependent. The program is hosted by Curve Lake First Nation entertainer Missy Knott and viewers also meet Coast Tsminshian First Nation Elder and educator, Shannon Thunderbird, who explains each teaching. Elder Thunderbird describes the virtues of being a good person, of taking care of one another and of taking care of the Earth.

Which Way Should I Go?
In this story, a happy young boy named Joey loves his grandmother very much and spends a lot of time singing and dancing with her. Joey's grandmother is always giving him pleasant choices to make, such as whether to have applesauce with cinnamon or with ice cream, and he especially enjoys his grandmother's Tla-o-qui-aht song "Waa-yee-seekee aakx kuu" which means "Which way should I go?" One day, Joey's grandmother dies and he experiences a very dark period when he feels that there is no point in choosing anything. Joey, however, feels his grandmother's presence through a vision of her and the sound of her song and he realizes that although he did not have a choice regarding his grandmother's death, he can make choices regarding his own life. From that time on, Joey's appreciation for all life has to offer is expressed through dynamic song and dance. Colourful, full-page illustrations support the easy-to-read text. The afterword explains what the First Nations "Waa-yee-seekee aakx kuu" song means to co-author Ron Martin.

Raven Power
Raven identifies, through several scenarios, that the men and boys in the community take the women and girls for granted and show lack of respect for them. The women go on a week-long retreat, and only Jacob seems able to make coffee, cook meals and keep things running. Raven and Chief Big Sky negotiate to bring the women back, make everyone happier and strengthen the community. This is a humorous and inspiring video in which a young girl takes responsibility to do something about a problem in her community. Gender equity is treated in a clear and balanced manner.
