Indicators for this outcome
(a) Define the term career pathway.
(b)

Discuss the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of career pathways including:

  • transition to work;
  • entrepreneurship or self-employment;
  • post-secondary education or training including apprenticeship; and,
  • a travel or gap year.
(c) List potential work opportunities within one’s community, province or country that are available through the transition to work pathway.
(d) Research career laddering within the workforce and on-the-job training opportunities associated with the transition to work pathway.
(e) Research the prominence of entrepreneurship or self-employment within one’s community, province and country.
(f) List sources of information and support (e.g., Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan, economic development offices and tribal councils) for entrepreneurs.
(g) List occupations that require education or training beyond high school.
(h)

Research factors associated with post-secondary education or training in Saskatchewan and Canada, such as:

  • types of schools (i.e., university, college and institutes);
  • granting of degrees, diplomas, certificates or other qualifications;
  • application process and deadlines;
  • entrance requirements;
  • costs;
  • availability; and,
  • length of programs.
(i) Research the process for becoming a journeyperson in the province of Saskatchewan, including the apprenticeship and tradesperson routes.
(j) Research potential local, provincial, national and global opportunities associated with a travel or gap year.
(k) Discuss reasons for taking a travel or gap year upon graduation from high school.
(l) Justify the viability of taking a travel or gap year, considering factors such as the impact on one’s finances.
(m) Discuss the role of lifelong learning regardless of one’s chosen career pathway.
