Outcome
Explore the cultural, economic and social impact of tourism.
Indicators
(a) Describe what tourism is and what it means to be a tourist.
(b) Discuss reasons (e.g., leisure, education, personal interests, disposable income and business) why people travel as tourists.
(c) Differentiate among outbound (i.e., Saskatchewan residents travelling out of province), inbound (i.e., out-of-province tourists travelling to and within the province) and domestic (i.e., Saskatchewan residents travelling within the province).
(d) Assess the relationship between culture and tourism.
(e) Research what is meant by the term visitor economy.

Analyze factors such as length of stay, purpose of visit, finances/budget, individual preferences, individual requirements (e.g., dietary restrictions and mobility issues) and time of year that help determine visitor needs for:

  • where to stay (e.g., accommodation);
  • where to eat (e.g., food and beverage);
  • what to do (e.g., entertainment and recreation and visitor services); and,
  • getting to and travelling within the destination (e.g., transportation).
(g) Discuss reasons (e.g., economic and job opportunities) why tourism is important to an area and specifically the local area.
(h) Explain potential negative impacts (e.g., wear and tear, pollution, rising costs for local residents and overcrowding) of tourism on a community.
(i) Investigate the five industries (i.e., food and beverage, accommodation, recreation and entertainment, transportation, and travel services) within the tourism sector.
(j) Identify examples of the five industries found within the community and the surrounding area.
