Module 3: Sustainable Tourism (Core)
Outcome
Analyze the importance of environmental, economic, cultural and social sustainability to the tourism sector.
Indicators
(a) Discuss what sustainability is and why it is an important consideration for all tourism industries at the local, provincial, national and global level.
(b) Describe the four components (i.e., environmental, economic, cultural and social) of sustainable tourism.
(c) Differentiate between mass and alternative tourism.
(d) Investigate potential positive and negative impacts of mass and alternative tourism on the environment, economy, culture and society.
(e) Research the origin, development and resulting impact of the Palau Pledge.

Reflect on ways to be a responsible and respectful tourist and guest such as:

  • researching local customs, languages and culture prior to visiting;
  • being mindful of protected and sacred species and spaces;
  • respecting the destination as though it is one’s home;
  • conserving water (e.g., taking short showers and using towels for more than one day);
  • supporting experiences and local ventures that have a positive social and environmental impact on the local community;
  • using public transport when possible;
  • purchasing authentic souvenirs and other goods from local artisans and enterprises; and,
  • choosing food and beverage, accommodation, recreation and entertainment, transportation, and travel services that implement sustainable practices and policies.
