Outcome
Examine the role and impact of tourism in Saskatchewan.
Indicators
(a) Research the evolution of tourism in Saskatchewan.
(b) Classify tourism businesses within the local community and surrounding area as family-owned and operated or as franchises.
(c) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of owning and operating a family-owned and operated business to owning and operating a franchised business.
(d) Discuss evolving expectations (e.g., experiencing nature and the outdoors, and enjoying local flavours and traditions) of travellers to the province and the resulting trends in tourism opportunities.
(e) Analyze regional differences in tourism in Saskatchewan.

Interpret statistics and facts related to tourism in Saskatchewan, such as:

  • the number of people who work in tourism-related jobs;
  • demographics of those who work in tourism;
  • the number of visits to and within Saskatchewan;
  • the region/province/country of origin of those who visit Saskatchewan;
  • annual spending;
  • most popular tourist attractions; and,
  • top leisure activities.
(g) Assess the attitudes and habits of Saskatchewanians pertaining to tourism in Saskatchewan.
(h) Propose factors (e.g., pandemic, economic downturn or economic boom) that may contribute to periods of growth and decline in the tourism sector in Saskatchewan.
(i) List examples of urban and rural tourism experiences in Saskatchewan for each of the five industries.
(j) Explain strategies used by tourism industries to increase customer count.
(k) Research how the tourism industry has capitalized, or could capitalize, on Saskatchewan’s natural capital (e.g., diversity, culture and natural landscape).
(l) Discuss the concept of competitive advantage.
(m) Summarize Saskatchewan’s competitive advantage in the tourism sector compared to other provinces and neighbouring American states.
(n) Investigate the connection and relationship of Métis, First Nations and Inuit peoples to the land in Saskatchewan and the resulting impact on tourism.

Reflect on what it means to be a respectful and responsible tourist in Saskatchewan, including:

  • acknowledging the traditional land and treaty territories situated within Saskatchewan;
  • acknowledging the uniqueness of linguistic and cultural groups among First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples;
  • acknowledging and following traditional protocols;
  • taking only, and all, personal belongings when leaving an area;
  • recognizing and respecting local natural/traditional laws that are passed down from one generation to the next; and,
  • being environmentally conscious.
