Outcome
Examine the role and impact of global tourism.
Indicators
(a) Discuss what is meant by the term global tourism.
(b) Research the evolution of global tourism.
(c) Discuss the impact of the tourism sector on the global economy.
(d) Identify trends (e.g., sharing economy, sustainability, eco tourism, business/leisure travel, robots and automation, artificial intelligence and virtual reality) that may impact global tourism.
(e) Investigate the attitudes and habits of Saskatchewanians and Canadians pertaining to global tourism.
(f)

Interpret statistics and facts related to global tourism, such as:

  • economic impact;
  • the number of jobs created by the industry;
  • the number of visits to and within various regions of the world; and,
  • annual spending on travel.
(g) Identify countries where tourism is a major industry or is on the rise.
(h) Conduct an inquiry into the reasons why tourism is a major industry or on the rise in specific countries and the factors that have contributed to its prominence and growth.
(i) Examine the work of organizations such as the United Nations World Tourism Organization that promote responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism.
(j) List examples of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites found within Canada and other parts of the world.
(k) Summarize potential positive and negative impacts on tourism and the local community when a location attains World Heritage Site designation.
