Module 13: Professionalism (Core)
Outcome
Examine the importance of professionalism for workers in the tourism sector.
Indicators
(a) Describe personal qualities and behaviours (e.g., demonstrating a positive attitude; showing responsibility; being adaptable; showing respect for self and others; demonstrating communication skills; and being an ambassador for one’s school, community and province) that demonstrate professionalism as it relates to working in the tourism industry.
(b)

Discuss:

  • the importance of professional appearance, good personal hygiene and conduct for a career in tourism;
  • professional etiquette in using a variety of communication tools such as email, telephone, social media and smart phone applications both on- and off-the-job while employed in the tourism industry; and,
  • common ethical standards (e.g., confidentiality and privacy) related to customer service in the tourism industry.
(c) Examine the contributions of employees and volunteers and how their actions and attitudes can positively or negatively shape the identity of a business, community, province and country.
(d) Assess the importance of acknowledging and respecting customer diversity.
(e) Reflect on the potential impact of personal beliefs and unconscious bias on relationships and interactions with clients and co-workers in the workplace.
(f) Discuss what it means to be a good ambassador for a community.
(g) Reflect on and commit to undertaking personal actions that demonstrate professionalism and being a good ambassador for one’s school and/or community.
