Module 20: Career Opportunities in Tourism (Core)
Outcome
Investigate careers in the tourism sector.
Indicators
(a) Examine the roles, responsibilities, educational qualifications and personal and professional qualities common to people involved in tourism-related occupations.
(b) List personal interests, skills, abilities and traits that may lead to a career in the tourism sector.
(c)

Debunk common myths related to tourism jobs, such as:

  • tourism jobs are found only in hotels, airlines and travel agencies;
  • tourism jobs pay minimum wage; and,
  • tourism jobs are available only in the summer.
(d) Research which tourism-related occupations are facing shortages and which are oversubscribed locally, regionally and/or provincially.
(e)

Reflect upon personal suitability or non-suitability for specific tourism- related occupations considering criteria such as:

  • initial and continuing educational and training requirements;
  • duties and skills required for the occupation;
  • work environment, including typical hours and shift work and typical locations;
  • current wages received in Saskatchewan and how these compare to current wages in other regions of Canada;
  • physical, mental and emotional stresses related to the occupation;
  • workplace hazards and safety considerations;
  • other occupations with which they interact;
  • apprenticeship and/or certifications available and/or required in Saskatchewan; and,
  • emerging and future trends in the industry.
(f) Communicate research findings through a creative means such as a display, brochure, video, digital presentation, website or oral presentation.
