Module 22: Sexual Health (Optional)
Outcome
Examine responsible sexual health practices.
Indicators
(a) Discuss personal responsibility for sexual health.
(b) Identify safe and high-risk sexual practices.
(c) Research different issues related to sexual health, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies.
(d) Assess the risk factors (e.g., STIs, unplanned pregnancies, emotional stress) of sexual activity.
(e) Discuss the importance of seeking regular medical care to support good sexual health.
(f) Explore legal responsibilities (e.g., age of consent, harassment, assault, coercion, HIV status) related to sexual activity.
(g) Inquire about services and supports for sexual health in the local community.
(h) Explore the importance of clear, effective communication regarding sex and sexual health.
(i) Identify the components (e.g., voluntary, informed, clear choice and must be given personally) and the forms (e.g., a person gives consent by word or behaviour) of sexual consent.
(j) Discuss the availability, function, and effectiveness of contraceptives.
(k) Establish that sexual rights are human rights related to sexuality and they are not subject to any discrimination based on sex, gender or sexual orientation.
(l) Recognize that sexual responsibility means making informed decisions (e.g., practising safe sex choices, abstinence).
(m) Discuss the risks of sexually transmitted infections through different routes of transmission (e.g., contact, bodily fluids) associated with different sexual practices.
(n) Investigate the symptoms, treatment options and potential impacts of one or more of the following sexually transmitted infections:
  • Genital herpes;
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV);
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV);
  • Hepatitis B and C;
  • Syphilis;
  • Gonorrhea; or,
  • Chlamydia.
