Module 23: Mental Wellness (Core)
Outcome
Investigate holistic approaches to mental wellness.
Indicators
(a) Examine the meaning of holistic well-being and how mental health fits into that definition.
(b) Assess personal current levels of wellness through inventories that address multiple dimensions (e.g., mental, spiritual, emotional and physical) of wellness.
(c) Examine the interactions and interconnectedness between the dimensions of wellness (e.g., mental, spiritual, emotional and physical) and how they impact mental health.
(d) Analyze various predisposing or precipitating factors (e.g., loss of a loved one, finances, chemical imbalance, life transitions and trauma) that contribute to mental illness.
(e) Examine signs and symptoms of stress such as:
  • emotional (e.g., burnout, irritability, anxiety);
  • mental (e.g., constant worry, difficulty concentrating); and,
  • physical (e.g., headache, muscle aches, sleep disturbance).
(f) Research potential mental health challenges tied to disorders (e.g., Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and the services and supports available in the local community and in Saskatchewan.
(g) Investigate supports in the local community to maintain positive mental wellness.
(h) Examine the effects that traumatic experiences (e.g., residential schools, religious and cultural persecution, serious accidents or illnesses) can have on individuals and communities.
(i) Identify risky behaviours (e.g., drug use, gang affiliation, toxic relationships, alcohol, self-harm) that can be symptomatic of mental illness.
(j) Analyze how Western, Indigenous, traditional, complementary and alternative approaches to health care can contribute to a holistic perspective of mental wellness.
(k) Investigate the positive mental health effects that can be achieved through developing a connection with nature.
(l) Discuss consequences (e.g., embarrassment, shame, resentment) of stigmas and misconceptions of mental health within society.
(m) Contrast the episodic nature of mental illness with fluctuation in moods.
(n) Discuss valuable skills (e.g., positive self-perception, stress management, positive social network, resilience) for maintaining mental wellness.
(o) Investigate the symptoms, treatment options and potential impacts of one or more of the following mental health disorders:
  • attention deficit hyperactivity disorder;
  • post-traumatic stress disorder;
  • depression;
  • anxiety disorders;
  • eating disorders; and,
  • addictions such as substance-use and gambling.
