Module 28: Consumer Choices (Optional)
Outcome
Analyze factors that influence the choices associated with responsible consumerism.
Indicators
(a) Research the history of the concept of consumer protection including consumer rights and responsibilities.
(b) Explore the procedure to file a complaint about a service:
  • Specify the problem;
  • Document the problem;
  • Determine a possible solution;
  • Identify with whom to negotiate;
  • Negotiate an agreement; and,
  • Give formal notice of further action (if negotiation fails).
(c) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing in bulk.
(d) Analyze strategies used in advertisements to influence a consumer to purchase a product.
(e) Examine characteristics of the minimalist consumer such as:
  • ecological conscience;
  • understanding of consumer society;
  • differentiation of the essential from the superfluous;
  • penchant for minimal packaging; and,
  • preference of simplicity.
(f) Analyze consumer practices in a variety of purchasing scenarios (e.g., seasonal, impulse, special events).
(g) Examine how culture influences the behaviour of individuals regarding consumption.
(h) Explore the concept of consumerism through the lens of First Nations and Métis worldviews.
(i) Discuss the potential for consumer racial profiling in a variety of consumer scenarios.
