Module 1A: Introduction to Theatre Production (Core)
Outcome
Investigate the roles and responsibilities of theatre production team members.
Indicators
(a) Discuss the functions of theatre such as theatre that entertains, informs, documents, challenges and inspires.
(b)

Generate and examine inquiry questions regarding the perceived value of theatre, such as:

  • What makes theatre unique?
  • Why do audiences continue to attend theatre after many hundreds of years?
  • What do theatre production teams contribute to an audience’s experience?
(c) Discuss the functions of theatre production teams (e.g., to bring artistic vision to life, to ensure production tasks are carried out in an aesthetically satisfying, safe, timely and cost-effective manner).
(d)

Research and discuss the roles of various permanent and contracted positions on a production team, such as:

  • director;
  • general manager;
  • company manager;
  • publicity personnel;
  • front of house staff;
  • stage and production managers;
  • running crew;
  • set and costume designers;
  • technical director; and,
  • light, sound, costume and makeup crews.
(e) Identify and categorize team member responsibilities, discuss the collaborative nature of theatre production and co-develop school-based ‘company’ rules and procedures.
(f) Create a visual representation (e.g., flowchart, map) to demonstrate relationships and interdependence among various theatre jobs.
(g) Organize and maintain a learning log (i.e., theatre log) including items such as tasks, schedules, experiences and understandings, to support planning, self-reflection, documentation and evaluation of learning.
(h) Identify and explore the responsibilities of production department heads.
(i) Describe the relationships among department heads and theatre crews.
(j) Investigate how theatres are funded (e.g., commercial, not-for-profit) and discuss the roles of producers and management teams in moving productions from inception to performance (e.g., licensing, budgeting, assembling creative and technical teams).
(k) Discuss similarities and differences between large and small theatre companies, considering the impact of the availability of resources (e.g., human and financial) on production.
