THEA5A
Module 5A: Set Design A (Core)
Outcome
Investigate artistic and technical approaches used in set design.
Indicators
(a) Examine the function of a set designer.
(b)

Research various types of theatre sets such as:

  • realistic (e.g., construct box set);
  • suggested (e.g., outdoor, street or forest scene);
  • period (e.g., Greek, Medieval, Elizabethan, Restoration, Modern);
  • abstract (e.g., symbolic use of a ladder to represent a house); and,
  • digitally created.
(c) Explain and reflect on how sets can create environments for dramatic work (e.g., realistic versus suggested set).
(d) Research and examine the creation of illusions (e.g., projections, transformational set pieces, revolves).
(e) Explore ways that a set design can be rendered using hand skills and digital technologies.
(f) Discuss the importance of researching and honouring the cultural significance of items (e.g., art, furniture, symbols) before incorporating them into set design.
(g) Examine strategies for identifying protocols and processes concerning the representation or use of culturally-sacred items in set design.
(h) Examine the stage and/or set requirements of a selected play or scene and propose ways to create the environment.
(i) Render a simple stage design considering factors such as the design scheme and scale for that space.
(j) Create a basic floor plan using relative scale.
(k) Investigate the purpose (e.g., artistic, functional) of a set model.
(l) Design and create a model (e.g., shoebox), in relative scale, of a real or imagined performance space for one style of set (e.g., realistic, suggested, period, abstract, digitally created).
(m) Reflect on personal successes and challenges experienced during design and creation of a real or imagined performance space.
