THEA5B
Module 5B: Set Design B (Optional)
Outcome
Apply artistic and technical components in set design.
Indicators
(a) Review and explore techniques (e.g., inspirational image bank, thumbnail sketches, ground plans, models) and aesthetic approaches (e.g., minimalism, selective realism, abstraction) used by set designers.
(b) Discuss purpose and processes for drafting ground plans.
(c)

Examine the limitations and potential of physical performance spaces in the creation of set design, considering factors such as:

  • demands of the stage and/or playing space;
  • sight lines (e.g., including masking requirements);
  • stage dimensions;
  • wing space;
  • effect and location of lighting instruments; and,
  • safety and well-being of performers (e.g., raked stage could have adverse effects on a performer's physical health if the angle of the rake is too steep).
(d) Investigate how set design decisions are informed by the thematic interpretation of the play or traditional practice.
(e) Examine the purpose of renderings and explore colour theory, techniques and media (i.e., traditional and digital).
(f) Create set design renderings for the same play or scene located in two different performance spaces and build a maquette for one of them, considering physical performance space and aesthetic interpretation.
(g) Present set design renderings and maquettes and explain key parts of the decision-making process.
(h) Discuss how a rendering informs own design decisions and identify how it impacts decisions of other production team members.
