THEA5C
Module 5C: Set Design C (Optional)
Outcome
Plan and create a set design for a real or imagined multi-set play, musical or devised drama/theatre production.
Indicators
(a) Investigate how physical performance space and artistic interpretation can shape a set design (e.g., sightlines, elevations, symbolism, style).
(b) Discuss advantages and disadvantages of manual, mechanized and automated set pieces.
(c) Examine the purposes, effects and mechanics of various types of stage machinery (e.g., revolves, scrims, drops, cycloramas, flying set pieces).
(d) Prepare ground plans for selected scenes or full production using hand or digitally-created scaled drawings including elevations, top view and side view.
(e) Incorporate design factors such as doorway dimensions, weight, portability, transporting, load in and load out to inform creation of a set design.
(f) Create a coloured scaled model and/or maquette based on ground plans for selected scenes from a multi-set play, musical or devised drama or theatre piece, real or imagined (e.g., paper or digital project).
(g) Research and examine modeling software for digitally-created renderings for set and scenery construction (e.g., creating ground plans, adding furniture and properties, drawing scenic elements).
(h)

Discuss advantages that digital media have over traditional rendering methods, such as:

  • speed - rendering digitally can be faster than traditional techniques when considering time spent to redo a traditional rendering;
  • ease - detailed or photographic looking elements can easily be reworked without having to start over; and,
  • duplication - a digitally rendered master image can save different looks as separate images for multiple sets.
(i) Examine the practice of re-purposing materials for theatre sets and discuss benefits of sustainable practices.
(j) Conduct a cost analysis and ensure that design plans work within a prescribed budget.
(k) Present design including rationale and explanations for design decisions reached in collaboration with production team.
