Module 6A: Stage Properties A (Core)
Outcome
Apply methods of categorizing and creating stage properties.
Indicators
(a) Define ‘stage properties’ and discuss their purpose in a production.
(b) Brainstorm ways (e.g., hand/action, background, breakaway, consumable/perishable, dress, dummy, rehearsal, set, static, stunt) of categorizing stage properties.
(c) Categorize a variety of stage properties such as food, magazines, weapons, signs, puppets, money, campfires, imaginary creatures and masks.
(d) Create an image bank (e.g., digital, print) to use as inspiration for different categories of properties.
(e)

Discuss how property designers must consider factors such as:

  • demands of the play;
  • budgetary limitations;
  • believability; and,
  • practicality.
(f) Design and create a three-dimensional property based on inspiration materials (e.g., photos, drawings, renderings) for a real or imagined production.
(g) Brainstorm and propose solutions to potential problems and situations that might occur in regard to properties.
(h)

Plan for the acquisition, organization and management of properties considering factors such as:

  • borrowing, transforming and creating;
  • making and taking inventory;
  • handling donations including care, return and acknowledgement;
  • meeting other demands of the play;
  • organizing properties tables, template(s) and storage;
  • maintaining and repairing properties;
  • delivering and returning properties to and from actors; and,
  • pre- and post-production responsibilities.
(i) Identify reasons why properties must be organized backstage.
(j) Collaborate on a plan to organize the properties for one or more acts of a play that is real or imagined.
(k) Practise safety precautions and procedures when working with stage properties in theatre.
