Module 6B: Stage Properties B (Optional)
Outcome
Create stage
properties for a real
or imagined
production.
Indicators
(a) | Examine the relationship between the set designer and a properties builder. |
(b) | Discuss the role of a properties/set designer in relation to the director. |
(c) | Participate in production design meetings and demonstrate collaboration with the director and design team (e.g., set, lighting and costume designers). |
(d) | Review methods for categorizing, acquiring and managing properties. |
(e) | Examine ways to create the illusion of authenticity of properties in relation to time period (e.g., flickering candles, old suitcases, rotary phone, fake blood, fake food). |
(f) | Research and design properties (e.g., food, weapon, appliance, decorative pieces, masks) representing specific places and times. |
(g) | Design a colour rendering and build a prop for a real or imagined production. |
(h) | Create a variety of faux surfaces. |
(i) | Experiment with a variety of materials (e.g., sculpting, paper maché, plaster), tools (e.g., cutting, gripping, striking, scraping, prying) and assemblage procedures (e.g., sewing, gluing, taping, fastening, wiring) in preparing a variety of properties. |
(j) | Adapt an existing property for a temporary purpose and return it to its original form. |
(k) | Reflect on challenges and successes experienced in the design and building process. |
(l) | Identify properties (e.g., cigarettes, weapons, glass) that may present safety challenges for the properties department. |
(m) | Practise safety precautions and procedures when working with stage properties. |
