Module 7A: Set Construction A (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate artistic and technical approaches used in set construction.
Indicators
(a) Review the roles of the technical director, production manager, scenic artist and other team members as they relate to set construction.
(b) Examine the specific responsibilities of the head carpenter and construction team related to the realization of scenic design concepts.
(c) Investigate how set construction is different from traditional building construction.
(d)

Demonstrate understanding of set construction and set piece terminology such as:

  • flats (e.g., zipper, book, unit set pieces);
  • sandbagging;
  • jacks;
  • fasteners;
  • masking; and,
  • revolves.
(e) Create an inspirational image bank of theatre set and scenery pieces that demonstrate construction practices considering a variety of factors such as portability, safety, illusion of reality or imagined environments.
(f) Create drawings for the construction of one or more two- or three- dimensional scenery pieces.
(g) Problem-solve ways to identify and simplify construction materials and techniques (e.g., suggestions of walls and windows rather than building the real thing).
(h) Create a two-dimensional (e.g., backdrop, basic 4x8 flat) or three- dimensional (e.g., bush, rock) piece of scenery.
(i) Identify and practise safety precautions (e.g., ensuring platforms meet structural strength standards, using non-combustive materials) required for set construction in a shop and stage setting.
