Module 7B: Set Construction B (Optional)
Outcome
Plan and construct scenery and set pieces for a theatre production, real or imagined.
Indicators
(a) Review specific responsibilities of head carpenter and staff.
(b) Review set construction and set piece terminology.
(c) Discuss how factors such as doorway dimensions, weight, portability, transporting, load in and load out inform construction of set pieces or scenery.
(d) Plan, draw and construct one or more two-dimensional pieces of scenery such as a flat with a hinged door or flat with a window frame.
(e)

Plan, draw and construct one or more three-dimensional set pieces such as:

  • trestle frame platform;
  • slanted platform or ramp;
  • stage cubes;
  • stairs with at least three steps; and,
  • column or tree trunk.
(f) Review and practise safety precautions required for set construction in a shop and stage setting.
(g) Use appropriate construction materials and bracing (e.g., fasteners, jack braces, weights) to install and secure scenery or set pieces according to safety standards.
(h) Practise good leadership and demonstrate collaboration.
