Outcome
Investigate artistic and technical approaches used in stage lighting.
Indicators
(a)

Examine the functions of lighting such as to:

  • ensuring visibility;
  • establishing a scene;
  • creating a mood;
  • sculpting;
  • focusing the audience’s attention;
  • composing visual pictures;
  • stylizing;
  • staging the story; and,
  • creating rhythm.
(b) Examine the basics of colour and light theory (e.g., the colour spectrum, colour and hue, values and intensity of colour, warm and cool colours, distribution of light, movement of light, psychology of colour).
(c) Examine procedures for operating and maintaining lighting equipment.
(d) Demonstrate the operation of a lighting control system (e.g., followspotting).
(e) Demonstrate how to hang, aim, focus and gel lighting instruments.
(f) Identify and practise safety precautions and procedures for stage lighting.
(g) Create an inspirational image bank of designs that demonstrate selected functions of lighting in theatre.
