Module 11B: Lighting Design B (Optional)
Outcome
Apply artistic and technical skills in lighting design and production in theatre.
Indicators
(a) Review basic colour and light theory and stage lighting functions.
(b) Review safety precautions and apply safety practices related to stage lighting (e.g., safely changing a bulb or rigging a spotlight).
(c) Explore the importance of coordinating lighting design with other design (e.g., costume, makeup and set) decisions.
(d) Examine a variety of lighting instruments (e.g., follow spots, strip lights, overhead lights such as Fresnels or Leko lights, LED, conventional halogen, intelligent) and their parts (e.g., plugs, barn doors, internal mechanisms).
(e) Research a variety of control systems (e.g., manual analog, programmed digital, dimmers).
(f)

Experiment with equipment and materials such as:

  • sources (e.g., follow spots, flashlights);
  • coloured gels (e.g., blending and toning);
  • gobos; and,
  • lighting board.
(g) Prepare (e.g., securing, stabilizing or hanging, inserting a gel, fastening to grids) a specific lighting instrument for use.
(h) Demonstrate operation of a lighting instrument with or without the use of a lighting board.
(i)

Experiment to create stage lighting effects to:

  • establish time and place;
  • create transitions (e.g., between scenes, moving to a different time or place or different acting area);
  • create or change mood;
  • sculpt actors or set pieces; and,
  • show a memory using shadow play.
(j) Determine lighting requirements for a real or imagined drama/theatre production.
