THEA11C
Module 11C: Lighting Design C (Optional)
Outcome
Apply lighting design innovations in theatre production.
Indicators
(a) Review safety precautions and apply safety practices related to stage lighting (e.g., safely changing a bulb or rigging a spotlight).
(b) Experiment with a variety of lighting instruments (e.g., follow spots, strip lights, overhead lights such as Fresnels or Leko lights, LED, conventional halogen, intelligent) and their parts (e.g., plugs, barn doors, internal mechanisms).
(c) Research and examine the use of black light to make performers invisible as they manipulate puppets or other properties.
(d) Collaborate with production team to address additional requirements such as black light costumes, sets, scenery, properties, materials and paint.
(e) Prepare (e.g., securing, stabilizing or hanging, inserting a gel, fastening to grids or lighting trees) a specific lighting instrument for use.
(f) Demonstrate operation of a lighting instrument with or without the use of a lighting board.
(g) Determine lighting requirements and create a design for a real or imagined production using actual or interactive online lighting instruments, applications and/or simulators.
(h) Justify choices made in the design of a light plan (plot) for a given play in a specific facility.
(i)

Create lighting documents such as:

  • lighting schedule;
  • patch schedule;
  • magic sheet; and,
  • cue sheet.
(j) Experiment with mobile technical theatre applications (e.g., gel manipulation, calculating throw distances) for lighting design.
(k) Identify opportunities (e.g., awards events, music concerts) and/or venues (e.g., places of worship, sports facilities) where lighting expertise could be shared.
(l) Collaborate with other team members during design and production meetings to achieve an artistic vision.
