Module 12A: Sound Design A (Core)
Outcome
Investigate artistic and technical approaches used in sound design.
Indicators
(a)

Discuss functions of sound design, such as:

  • helping to establish time or location;
  • transitioning between scenes;
  • creating or changing the mood;
  • increasing suspense; and,
  • enhancing characters’ qualities.
(b) Experiment with basic recording and playback sound systems, including analog and digital systems, and explore controllable properties such as pitch, volume, quality, direction and duration.
(c) Research and explore fundamentals of stage sound and video in theatre.
(d) Create and find sources for sound effects.
(e) Discuss and examine ways of organizing sound (e.g., plot, cue sheets) for stage productions or events.
(f) Follow a sound script.
(g) Identify and practise safety precautions and procedures when working with stage sound and video.
(h) Create an inspirational sound bank of designs that demonstrate selected functions of sound in theatre.
