THEA13
Module 13: Projection Design and Technologies (Optional)
Outcome
Apply technical skills
to create stage
projections that
incorporate
projection design.
Indicators
(a) | Investigate the functions of projection design and use of projection systems and technologies. |
(b) | Discuss projection design processes (e.g., researching, storyboarding, acquiring images or footage, editing, installing, controlling). |
(c) | Explore ways that projections (e.g., front versus rear, slideshow software, animation and other video, shadow play) can be created and used in theatre. |
(d) | Investigate different ways to create projections considering technical specifications and factors such as the projectors’ lumens, throw distance, throw ratio, physics of light, intensity of light and direction. |
(e) | Experiment with the creation and refinement of projections (e.g., replacing constructed set design items with still images, comparing presentation software, trying short-throw lens, projecting moving images, adjusting theater lighting, avoiding unwanted shadows, playing with fades and transitions). |
(f) | Experiment with different types of projection screens (e.g., white screens versus black screens versus gray, blank walls, painted portable plywood screen, painter’s plastic stretched on a frame, existing cyclorama, Screen Goo painted surfaces, fabric screens, rear-projection screen or frosted shower curtains) and adjust stage lighting to compare results (e.g., black screens transmit less light than white but have more contrast and resist unwanted ambient light). |
(g) | Create an inspirational ideas bank of designs that use projections for various purposes. |
(h) | Identify and practise safety precautions and procedures when working with projection equipment. |
