THEA14
Module 14: Theatre Innovations in the Digital Age (Optional)
Outcome
Assess the impact of innovations in digital technologies on design and special effects in theatre production.
Indicators
(a)

Examine how designers in theatre incorporate machinery and digital technologies to create illusions and special effects such as:

  • raked stages;
  • revolves;
  • scrims;
  • drops;
  • fog, smoke, fire, haze;
  • cycloramas;
  • rain and water effects; and,
  • flying set pieces.
(b) Identify and practise safety precautions and procedures, including a fire drill, when working with staging, equipment and chemicals.
(c) Use non-digital and digital technologies to create effects such as rain, snowstorms or fire.
(d) Explore technologies used to create effects such as moving platforms, computerized video projections, moveable screens or scenery, kinetic features and sound and lighting effects.
(e) Research digital innovations (e.g., projections, immersive environments) and experiment with video, sound, lighting and projection design for theatre, real or imagined.
(f) Use software and applications for the creation of illusions and special effects for various purposes on stage.
(g) Identify and propose solutions for potential challenges when using projections (e.g., removing and cleaning filters, changing lamps, avoiding error messages, keystone correction, use of deflector mirrors, adjusting theatrical lighting to improve projected images).
(h) Apply technical innovation in both the rehearsal and performance phases of a production, as opportunities arise.
(i) Create an inspirational ideas bank of innovative designs, special effects and technological innovations, for various staging purposes.
