Outcome
Examine the role and responsibilities of a stage manager.
Indicators
(a) Describe the role of a stage manager.
(b)

Research stage manager responsibilities such as:

  • carrying out main administrative duties for the production;
  • scheduling and organizing (e.g., fittings and rehearsals);
  • communicating director’s instructions to crew members; and,
  • organizing backstage activity during the show.
(c) Explain the importance of the planning phase of a theatre production.
(d) Discuss ways that stage managers organize and manage production time, tasks and resources.
(e)

Describe the purpose and procedures for tasks carried out by stage managers, such as:

  • taking notes during meetings;
  • scheduling planning, rehearsals and production;
  • co-ordinating with production department heads;
  • maintaining blocking notes;
  • creating, revising and distributing call sheets;
  • coordinating set up and strike; and,
  • calling the show.
(f) Create an organizational plan (e.g., properties table, pre-set, stage left, stage right) for managing properties backstage during a real or imagined production.
(g) Identify, record and manage the properties list of at least 10 items for a scene from a real or imagined production.
(h) Communicate clearly with production team members.
