Module 17: Front of House (Optional)
Outcome
Assume the role of front of house manager for a production.
Indicators
(a)

Research and describe the functions of front of house manager including responsibilities such as:

  • training front of house team;
  • collaborating with team members such as box office, ushers, stage manager, public relations, media and publicity;
  • managing and running box office reservations and ticket sales;
  • reviewing traffic flow and emergency evacuation procedures (e.g., fire exits, emergency restrictions);
  • preparing the space to ensure front of house area and auditorium are ready for the show (e.g., organizing programmes and ushers);
  • making arrangements for classes or workshops in theatre space;
  • managing events (e.g., hosting meetings, parties or fundraisers);
  • developing concession policy and arranging for refreshments, food or merchandise; and,
  • working with building supervisor and maintenance to ensure building security and health and safety of team members and patrons.
(b) Create a house manager's handbook for the school's theatre or performance facility and include items such as seating, house rules, emergency and evacuation procedures, audience calls and communication.
(c) Examine ways to ensure safety and increase efficiency in the performance of duties.
(d) Demonstrate attention to detail, time management, quality customer service and communication skills with audience and theatre personnel.
