Outcome
Investigate the history of Indigenous agriculture.
Indicators
(a) Examine the importance of the relationship First Nations and Métis peoples have with the land.
(b) Discuss Indigenous perspectives on agriculture and their connections to the land with an Elder or Knowledge Keeper.
(c) Investigate the impact of settlers on Indigenous agricultural practices.
(d) Discuss the agriculture clauses found in the numbered treaties from 1871-1921.
(e) Explore the difficulties Indigenous farmers experienced through the creation of the Indian Act of 1876. (e.g., the pass and permit system from the late 1800s up to and including 1951).
(f) Research the significance of traditional farming methods (e.g., Three Sisters crop model and planting a fish with corn seed) developed by First Nations and Métis communities.
(g) Investigate the importance of the role of bison for First Nations and Métis peoples.
(h) Explore the impact the mass elimination of bison had on Indigenous communities.
(i) Describe the inclusion of agriculture (e.g., livestock and farming implements) in the numbered treaties.
(j) Discuss the importance to the First Nations peoples of agriculture being included in the numbered treaties.
(k) Explain the role of livestock (e.g., oxen, horses and cattle) in early Indigenous farming practices.
