Module 12C: Livestock Facility Regulations and Maintenance (Optional)
Outcome
Explore the governing regulations and maintenance of livestock production facilities.
Indicators
(a) Identify the facility requirements and regulations for different holding areas to separate animals for various reasons (e.g., breeding, egg laying, incubators, injured or ill animal, maternity pen and weaning).
(b) Explore the regulations and relevant calculations (e.g., animal unit month [AUM]) for determining suitable pasture size for a particular type and quantity of livestock.
(c)

Analyze the factors affecting pasture quality, including:

  • biotic (e.g., parasites, disease and predators);
  • environmental conditions;
  • geographic location and slope of the land;
  • grazing management;
  • soil (e.g., structure, texture and pH);
  • water access and quality; and,
  • type of grass and/or legume.
(d) Apply basic repair and maintenance skills to buildings, livestock facilities, vegetation and roads.
