Module 13A: Crop Facility Design (Optional)
Outcome
Indicators
(a)

Describe the components of a crop production facility, including:

  • equipment storage and maintenance buildings;
  • crop and fertilizer storage;
  • equipment accessibility; and,
  • technology.
(b) Analyze the cost, availability, effectiveness, maintenance requirements and worker safety of storage options (e.g., hopper bottom, flat bottom, round and square bins, grain bags, elevators, piles and Quonsets) for grain and fertilizer.
(c) Explore the manufacturer's recommendations for anchoring grain and fertilizer bins.
(d) Explore the unique characteristics of specialty crop storage and transportation (e.g., refrigeration for fruits and vegetables and bags for wild rice).
(e) Describe characteristics of grain and fertilizer storage (e.g., protection from moisture, vegetation control, bin identification and access).
(f) Describe the equipment and operating principles of drying and cooling grain.
(g) Explain the design and operation of different types of irrigation equipment (e.g., pumps, piping, pivot, wheel-move and hand-move).
(h) Apply basic repair and maintenance skills to buildings, vegetation and roads.
(i) Identify ways to mitigate the safety and health risks of entering a storage building.
(j) Discuss ways to mitigate the safety risks of climbing on top of storage structures (e.g., grain bins).
