Examine the structure
and organization of farm

plans for livestock
production.
Indicators
(a) | Describe the annual cycle (i.e., processes followed in a sequence over the course of a year like breeding and culling) and production cycle (e.g., postpartum, conception, mid gestation and late gestation) in livestock production. |
(b) | Explore the required structures (e.g., buildings, fences and corrals) and land (e.g., land features including soil types and use of that land) of a livestock operation. |
(c) | Explain the rationale for choosing a type of ranching, size of operation and breed of livestock for a given farm location. |
(d) | Investigate livestock management practices (e.g., percentage as meat processing, pure-bred breeding stock development, crossbreeding, show and aging livestock and introduction of new animals to the herd or operation) including the ability to handle waste (e.g., manure and carcasses) and herd protection measures (e.g., herd dogs and donkeys). |
(e) | Explore the biosecurity and food safety requirements (e.g., ProAction, VBP+ and Start Clean Stay Clean) for livestock production. |
(f) | Examine aspects of livestock nutrition programs including sources of feed, prepared rations, feed storage, method of feeding, grazing methods and sources of water. |
(g) | Discuss the finances of a livestock operation including equipment and human resources, types of products (e.g., meat, eggs, wool, honey and dairy), bedding requirements (e.g., straw bales), outsourcing stages (e.g., feedlot connection), accessibility to markets, cost of input and expected revenue. |
