Module 17B: Livestock Management Plan (Core)
Outcome
Prepare a management plan for a livestock operation of one or more specific species.
Indicators
(a) Identify one or more livestock species (e.g., cow/calf, dairy, equine, pork, bison, poultry and bees) for a farm operation.
(b) Explore the provincial regulations and requirements for establishing a livestock operation.
(c) Determine the annual cycle (e.g., breeding and culling) and production cycle date ranges (e.g., postpartum, conception, mid gestation and late gestation) for the chosen livestock species.
(d) Explore the structures (e.g., buildings, fences and corrals) and land (e.g., features including soil types and use of that land) needed for a chosen livestock operation.
(e) Analyze the suitability of farm locations for a chosen species of livestock and size of operation.
(f) Investigate livestock management practices (e.g., percentage as meat processing, crossbreeding, show and aging livestock and introduction of new animals to the herd or operation) including the ability to handle waste (e.g., manure and carcasses) and herd protection measures (e.g., herd dogs, donkeys and structures).
(g) Develop a nutrition program for a chosen species of livestock including sources of feed, prepared rations, feed storage, method of feeding, grazing methods and sources of water.
(h) Explore the finances of a chosen farm operation including human and equipment resources, types of products (e.g., meat, eggs, wool, honey and dairy) outsourcing stages (feedlot connection), accessibility to markets, cost of input and expected revenue.
(i) Discuss the implications of climate change (e.g., drought, deluge and storms) on the availability of feed and healthy pastures for grazing.
(j) Prepare an effective time management schedule that balances farm time with school, work and recreation and considers seasonal time management differences.
