Outcome
Examine animal breed behaviours.
Indicators
(a) Explore behaviours of livestock including herd instinct, characteristics of the social hierarchy in a herd and flight distance.
(b) Describe basic livestock needs (e.g., comfort, reproduction, exercise, food, communication, survival and protection).
(c) Explain how livestock respond to various stimuli (e.g., response [positive], reaction [negative], acceptance and tolerance) in their environment.
(d) Examine how a handler should react to livestock responding to specific stimuli (e.g., moving to different surroundings, loud noises, changes in weather and dogs).
(e) Identify and explain possible causes of vices (e.g., teeth grinding, rearing, biting and difficulty in catching).
(f) Investigate handler techniques designed to minimize risks to animal and worker health and prevent injuries.
(g) Discuss how to handle different animal breeds according to their behavioural characteristics.
