Indicators
(a) | Explore the effects of stress in livestock on their health and production. |
(b) | Recognize the characteristics of an animal under stress (e.g., agitated or aggressive behaviour and flight risk). |
(c) | Describe how a handler's body language (e.g., aggressive behaviour) affects livestock. |
(d) | Explain the use of safe handler behaviours (e.g., slow movements, calm tone of voice, avoid cornering livestock and maintaining an escape route) when approaching and working with livestock under stress. |
(e) | Demonstrate and explain how to approach an animal safely using ground manners (e.g., scope of vision). |
(f) | Develop a plan for handling livestock experiencing stressful situations (e.g., injured animal and death of the queen bee) and emergency situations (e.g., barn fire and livestock struck by vehicle). |
(g) | Describe the accepted methods for properly euthanizing livestock in the least painful and most humane way. |
(h) | Explore the benefits of proper bedding and housing design (e.g., stall size, hive structure, base, floor grooving, scratchers and location of waterers) on animal comfort. |
