Explore safe methods of working around, and handling, livestock under stress.
Indicators
(a) Explore the effects of stress in livestock on their health and production.
(b) Recognize the characteristics of an animal under stress (e.g., agitated or aggressive behaviour and flight risk).
(c) Describe how a handler's body language (e.g., aggressive behaviour) affects livestock.
(d) Explain the use of safe handler behaviours (e.g., slow movements, calm tone of voice, avoid cornering livestock and maintaining an escape route) when approaching and working with livestock under stress.
(e) Demonstrate and explain how to approach an animal safely using ground manners (e.g., scope of vision).
(f) Develop a plan for handling livestock experiencing stressful situations (e.g., injured animal and death of the queen bee) and emergency situations (e.g., barn fire and livestock struck by vehicle).
(g) Describe the accepted methods for properly euthanizing livestock in the least painful and most humane way.
(h) Explore the benefits of proper bedding and housing design (e.g., stall size, hive structure, base, floor grooving, scratchers and location of waterers) on animal comfort.
