Outcome
Investigate livestock nutritional requirements.
Indicators
(a) Define feed terminology such as total digestible nutrients, protein content, energy, trace minerals, crude protein, crude fat and feed supplements.
(b) Read and interpret feed labels.
(c) Identify the basic nutritional requirements of various livestock according to breed, age, gender, time of year, reproductive cycle and physical condition.
(d) Explore the importance of calculating dry matter and using a scale to feed animals a specific weight of feed.
(e) Describe the water requirements of livestock, including factors that may affect these requirements (e.g., animal size, growth stage, temperature and humidity).
(f) Explain how feed concentrates, supplements and creep feeding can be used to meet an animal’s unique needs.
(g) Discuss why a salt block is used in livestock nutrition.
(h) Examine the advantages and disadvantages of commercially prepared feeds.
(i) Investigate the proper mixture of prepared food for nutritional value for a specific purpose (e.g., maintenance, growing and fattening).
