Module 23C: Livestock Feeding Programs (Core)
Outcome
Apply understanding of nutrition to livestock feeding programs.
Indicators
(a) Explain the function of parts of the digestive system and the concept of rumination in specific livestock.
(b) Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of different types of feeding systems.
(c)

Prepare a feeding plan for specific livestock including:

  • rations, properties and quantities;
  • water quality (e.g., mineral content);
  • time of day, frequency and location;
  • time of year; and,
  • types of feeding equipment.
(d) Investigate support programs for managing livestock feeding.
(e) Develop and use feeding and nutritional records.
(f) Determine the cost of feed (e.g., hay, grain and supplements) for one animal of a specific type of livestock, for one year.
(g)

Explore ways to identify, address and prevent nutrition and feeding concerns, such as:

  • inadequate or improper feed rations;
  • consumption of undesirable plant species;
  • physiological response to changes in feed (e.g., colic and founder);
  • feeding during severe weather;
  • feeding plans to allow for time off;
  • digestive diseases and disorders;
  • foreign objects (e.g., use of magnets); and,
  • dehydration.
