Outcome
Demonstrate the proper use of livestock handling equipment.
Indicators
(a) Demonstrate the safe operation of large handling equipment (e.g., squeezes, head gates and chutes) to prevent animal and worker injury when moving livestock.
(b) Explore the types and operation of different gates to manage the movement of livestock.
(c) Practise proper use of hand-held tools (e.g., prods, whips and control poles) for managing livestock.
(d) Discuss the use of animal identification equipment (e.g., brander, tagger and microchips).
(e) Use small equipment (e.g., shears, hoof trimmer and grooming gear) to care for livestock.
(f) Compare equipment used for handling large (e.g., cattle, horses and bison) and small (e.g., pork, chickens and sheep) livestock.
(g) Perform cleaning and sanitizing procedures of livestock handling equipment.
(h) Investigate the use of scales to weigh different types of livestock.
