Explore the cause, treatment, management and prevention of livestock injuries, conditions and diseases.
Indicators
(a) Explain the importance of biosecurity in ensuring herd health and production.
(b) Describe mitigation strategies to prevent new livestock from introducing diseases to a farm.
(c) Identify the contents of a basic first aid kit and the general equipment (e.g., pails, stomach tubes and blankets) used to treat injured animals.
(d) Investigate the cause, treatment and prevention of injuries (e.g., sprained joints and impaled objects) and open wounds.
(e) Research common conditions such as influenza (e.g., bird and swine flu), African Swine Fever and food-borne illnesses (e.g., Escherichia coli and Salmonella).
(f) Identify common symptoms, nature and the precautionary measures to prevent a chosen disease.
(g) Explore the identification and management of genetic deformations (e.g., mule foot, cleft pallet and beak deformity) in livestock.
(h) Identify the causes and treatment of gastro-intestinal conditions (e.g., consuming foreign objects, bloat and constipation).
