Explore the attributes of ideal pastures.
Indicators
(a) Investigate the optimum plant composition of a pasture for a specific species of livestock.
(b)

Describe optimal pasture conditions, including:

  • clean and sufficient water supply;
  • abundant and healthy vegetation cover; and,
  • natural shelter and shade.
(c) Identify invasive plants in pastures and why they are a problem.
(d) Discuss clean water management practices such as fencing dugouts, protecting riparian areas and preventing algae growth.
(e) Explore the components of a pasture (e.g., mineral tubs and water containers) that require regular inspection and maintenance.
(f) Compare the use of tame and native pasture.
(g) Describe the positive and negative impacts of livestock on the land and carbon cycle.
(h) Discuss why native prairie is considered an endangered ecosystem.
(i) Explore why some land is used for pasture instead of crop farming.
