Outcome
Investigate pasture maintenance and livestock checks.
Indicators
(a) Demonstrate how to use mending tools (e.g., pliers, hammer and post-hole digger) to repair fences and corrals.
(b) Identify personal protective equipment required when mending fences.
(c) Explain the importance of pen and pasture checks.
(d)

Describe common livestock concerns to look for when conducting pasture checks, including:

  • missing or stray animals;
  • abnormal animal behaviour;
  • signs of respiratory conditions;
  • eye and skin irregularities;
  • eating disorders and changes to urine and feces; and,
  • signs of dehydration and fever.
(e) Describe the characteristics of a pasture that has been over grazed.
(f) Explain how to calculate animal equivalents to determine the required pastureland for different livestock species.
(g) Investigate the effect of climate changes (e.g., drought, deluge and storms) on pasture vegetation and land.
