Indicators
(a) Describe how records can be used to communicate between people (e.g., employers and employees, co-workers, veterinarians, feed specialists and end consumers) involved in the farming operation.
(b)

Develop a record keeping plan for a particular species of livestock in an operation, that includes:

  • reproduction (e.g., female productivity and male fertility, breeding dates, birthing rates, birth weights and parent/offspring pairings);
  • raising livestock (e.g., farrowing records, weaning weight and rate of gain and age of livestock in different pens);
  • nutrition (e.g., kind of feed, feed rations and days on pasture);
  • animal management (e.g., sick or injured animals and medication records, daily checks); and,
  • financial management (e.g., inventory, markets, customers, prices, sales, shipments and purchases).
(c) Explore how collected data is analyzed to inform necessary changes to the production operation.
