Outcome
Investigate care of pregnant and post-birth livestock.
Indicators
(a) Explore the factors to consider regarding management of a pregnant female including gestation period, expected birthing date, health care, labour and post-birthing care.
(b) Describe the different methods used to help an animal give birth (e.g., pulling and caesarian-section).
(c) Identify delivery situations that require veterinary care (e.g., breech, lengthy labour and mother in distress).
(d) Discuss the characteristics, treatment and prevention of common metabolic conditions (e.g., ketosis, milk fever and mastitis) associated with reproduction.
(e) Describe the basic care of newborn livestock.
(f) Explore the use of milk replacer, replacement mother and proper facilities (e.g., special pens, milk bottles and/or feed and water containers) to care for orphaned offspring.
