Module 39A: Technology in Livestock Production (Optional)
Outcome
Investigate the use of technology in livestock production.
Indicators
(a)

Research the effects of advances in technology in one or more of the following areas:

  • livestock monitoring;
  • processing data;
  • distribution and marketing of animals and products;
  • safer working conditions;
  • safer foods;
  • communication;
  • reduced environmental and ecological impact (air and water quality);
  • higher productivity (workers and livestock);
  • decreased use of water, pesticides and medications;
  • increased farm safety;
  • GMO animals; and,
  • independence of producers (e.g., performing their own livestock tests).
(b) Investigate the Canadian organizations involved in research and development of technology in livestock production.
(c) Describe the advancement in technology of a particular piece of equipment (e.g., milking machine and animal tags) including changes being suggested for the future.
(d) Explore the advances in technology used to adapt unsuitable areas for livestock production (e.g., ostrich in Saskatchewan).
(e) Discuss the difficulties faced by producers in using and fixing modern equipment including software agreements and data manipulation.
(f) Explore the financial difficulties faced by smaller operations investing in more advanced equipment.
